사회복무요원으로 근무하며 요양원에서 생활하는 노인분들을 자주 마주했다. 그곳에서 시간을 보내며 가장 많이 보게 된 것은 죽음이 아니라 시간이 사람에게 남기는 변화였다. 몸은 예전 같지 않고 기억은 점점 흐려지지만, 그 안에는 여전히 각자의 삶이 남아 있었다.

  그 모습을 보며 나는 사라짐에 대해 생각하게 되었다. 사람은 어느 순간 갑자기 없어지는 것이 아니라 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 조금씩 변하고 비워진다. 어떤 것은 사라지고 어떤 것은 남는다. 나는 그 과정에서 느껴지는 감정과 흔적을 작품으로 표현하고 싶었다.

  이번 작업은 유리를 불어 만든 형태를 다시 깎아내는 방식으로 제작하였다. 형태의 일부를 제거하고 내부를 드러내는 과정은 시간이 지나며 변화하는 존재의 모습과 닮아 있다. 형태는 남아 있지만 이전과는 다른 모습이 되고, 비워진 공간은 존재했던 시간의 흔적처럼 남는다.

  이 작업은 죽음 자체에 대한 이야기가 아니다. 오히려 끝을 향해 가는 시간 속에서도 여전히 존재하고 있는 모습, 그리고 그 안에 남아 있는 흔적에 대한 이야기이다. 나는 요양원에서 마주했던 사람들을 떠올리며, 사라져 가는 과정의 한 장면을 유리 안에 담고자 하였다.

   While serving as a public service worker, I frequently encountered elderly residents living in nursing homes. Spending time there, what I witnessed most was not death itself, but the changes that time leaves on a person. Their bodies were no longer as they once were, and their memories gradually faded, yet each of them still carried the traces of a life fully lived.

  Observing them led me to reflect on the nature of disappearance. People do not vanish all at once; rather, they change and empty out little by little over time. Some things disappear, while others remain. I wanted to express the emotions and traces embedded within this process through my work.

  This series was created by first shaping glass through the glassblowing process and then carving away portions of the form. The act of removing material and revealing the interior parallels the way existence changes over time. The form remains, yet it becomes something different from what it once was, while the hollowed spaces persist like traces left behind by lived experience.

  This work is not about death itself. Rather, it is about the presence that endures within the passage of time and the traces that continue to remain. Recalling the people I met in the nursing home, I sought to capture a moment within the gradual process of fading away through glass.
