말은 말이 없다

: 그러므로 말은 망(惘)한다

  사람들의 소란은 겉잡을 수 없이 몸집을 키웠다. 이제는 실재를 마주하지 않아도, 청자의 의사와는 무관하게 수많은 대화들이 매순간 눈과 귀를 덮친다. 단어의 나열이 너무 많은 사람의 대화는 종종 그 의미를 흐린다. 잠시 사람의 언어를 내려놓자. 수많은 대화는 생각보다 눈빛과 온도와도 같은 추상적인 표현에 쉽게 담긴다. 말이 없는 그들이 건네는 이야기는 단어의 나열이 없다. 그림 위에 언어는 분해되어 느리게 흐른다. 언어가 분해되고 그곳에 사물과 풍경들이 들어선다.

  사람이 모든 곳의 주어가 된 세상에서, 그 주어가 사라진 곳에 서술어와 목적어가 덩그러니 남았다. 불완전한 문장은 꽤나 독단적인 주어의 소멸을 통해, 그들이 가진 의미를 비로소 의연히 전달한다. 그레이엄 하먼의 말을 빌려보자면, 사물은 인간의 시선과 무관하게 그 자체로서 오롯이 실재한다. 인간이 퇴장한 세상에서 비로소 주인공이 된 사물들이 묵묵히 내뿜는 그 독립적인 실재성을 포착하기 위한 붓질을 올려본다.

  이러한 부재의 풍경이 평화롭지만은 않았다. 오히려 팽팽한 긴장감이 가득한, 발터 벤야민이 외젠 아제의 텅 빈 거리를 두고 "마치 범행 현장과 같다"고 묘사했던 그 서늘한 기척과 맞닿아 있다. 범인은 사라졌지만 그가 남긴 흔적들이 공간에 풍기는 향이 있다. 사람이 없기에 역설적으로 누군가 '있었음'을 강렬하게 증언하는 상태, 즉 인간의 '있었음'과 '없음' 사이의 찰나를 잡아본다.

  나의 그림은 소란스러운 언어를 걷어내고, 등장인물이 사라진 무대 위의 무대장치를 만지는 일에 가깝다. 화면 위의 객체들은 비로소 거대한 기척이 되어 각자의 ʻ있었음’을 내비친다. 이들이 건네는 것은 위로의 말이나 정보가 담긴 이야기가 아니다. 대화가 멈추고 사람이 물러난 자리, 그 틈새에서 비로소 들려오는 사물들의 낮은 숨소리에 귀를 기울여본다. 나는 그저, ʻ없음(罔)’을 마주하는 ʻ마음(心)’, 그 ʻ망(惘)’의 시간을 잠시 늘어뜨릴 뿐이다.

Words Are Wordless

: Therefore, Words Daze.

  The clamor of the crowd has grown uncontrollably. Now, even without confronting actual presence, countless conversations overwhelm our eyes and ears at every moment, regardless of the listener's will. A mere string of words often blurs the true meaning of human dialogue. Let us step away from human language for a moment. So much of our conversation is effortlessly contained in abstract expressions, like a gaze or a certain warmth, rather than in words. The stories shared by the silent bear no sequence of vocabulary. On the canvas, language is dismantled, flowing at a slower pace. As language deconstructs, objects and landscapes take its place.

  In a world where humans have always been the subject of every sentence, the removal of that subject leaves behind only verbs and objects. These incomplete sentences, through the disappearance of a rather dogmatic subject, finally convey their inherent meaning with quiet dignity. To borrow the words of Graham Harman, objects exist entirely as themselves, independent of the human gaze. I lift my brush to capture the independent reality quietly exuded by objects, which have finally become the protagonists in a world vacated by humans.

  This landscape of absence is far from peaceful. Rather, it is filled with a taut tension, bordering on the chilling miracle that Walter Benjamin described when looking at Eugène Atget’s empty streets as being "like the scene of a crime." The perpetrator is gone, but the traces left behind fill the space with a distinct aura. Paradoxically, the absence of people intensely witnesses that someone 'was there'—capturing the fleeting moment between human 'presence' and 'absence.'

  My painting is close to stripping away clamorous language and tending to the stage props on a stage where the actors have vanished. Only then do the objects on the canvas become a grand miracle, revealing each one's history of 'having been there.' What they offer is not a story of consolation or information. I lean in to listen to the faint breathing of objects, a sound that can only be heard in the gaps left behind when conversation ceases and humans step back. I merely wish to briefly suspend that time of mang (惘, daze/oblivion)—the 'mind' (心) that confronts 'absence' (罔).
