“흔적에는 보이지 않는 이야기가 스며 있다.”

이시평은 사물과 현상에 숨겨진 이면을 포착하고, 그것을 ‘시각적 상징’으로 드러내는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 최근에는 ‘흔적’이라는 개념에 집중하며, 물질의 작용으로 인해 남겨지는

다양한 자국들을 일상 속에서 수집한다. 흔적은 우리가 인식하지 못한 채 지나치는 큰 서사를 품은 작은 단서이자, 보이지 않는 세계를 드러내는 시각적 요소로 기능한다. 그에게 ‘보이지 않는다’는 것은 존재하지 않음을 의미하지 않는다. 아직 발견되지 않았을 뿐인 상태이며, 그 가능성을 품은 상징적 체계이다. 따라서 대부분의 그의 작업은 마치 발견되기를 기다리고 있는 흔적들을 유심히 관찰하고, 그 안에 잠재된 서사를 상상하며 시각화하는 과정에서 출발한다.

이러한 작업관은 어린 시절의 경험에서 비롯되었다. 그는 경북 의성의 시골 마을에서, 투병 중이던 어머니를 대신해 그를 돌보던 할머니의 손길 속에서 자랐다. 농사를 짓던 할머니는 매 끼니가 탄생하기까지 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 이어지는 ‘보이지 않는 과정’을 몸소 보여주었고, 이를 통해 그는 반복되는 일상 속에서 미묘한 차이를 알아차리는 감각과 과정의 가치를 배울 수 있었다. 또한, 혼자 보내는 시간이 많았던 만큼 주변의 작은 상호작용을 관찰하고 그 너머의 세계를 상상하는 습관을 들였으며, 이는 이후 예술적 사고의 바탕이 되었다.

이시평은 특정한 소재나 형식에 머무르기보다 서로 다른 물질이 상호작용하며 만들어내는 관계와 변화의 과정을 탐구하며, 그 과정이 드러내는 보이지 않는 세계의 층위를 읽어내고, 이를 시각적 구조로 번역하는 실험을 지속하고 있다. 현재 신당창작아케이드의 입주작가로 활발히 활동하고 있으며, <일지(Log)> 시리즈로 2025년 청주국제공예공모전에서 대상을 수상해 작품이 청주 공예관에 영구 소장되는 성과를 얻었다.

“SOME MARKS TELL A STORY.”

Sipyeong Lee captures the hidden dimensions of objects and phenomena, revealing them as visual symbols. Recently, he has focused on the concept of “ trace,” collecting the marks left by the actions of materials in everyday life. These traces serve as small clues that contain larger narratives often overlooked, functioning as visual elements that reveal an unseen world. For him, “unseen” does not mean nonexistent; it is simply undiscovered, a symbolic system full of potential. Therefore, much of his work begins with careful observation of traces that seem to await discovery, imagining the narratives they carry, and visualizing those possibilities.

This approach stems from his childhood experiences. Lee grew up in a rural village in Uiseong, Gyeongbuk, under the care of his grandmother while his mother battled illness. His grandmother, who cultivated rice and fruit, demon strated firsthand the long, unseen processes involved in bringing each meal into being. Through this, Lee developed a sensitivity to subtle differences in repetitive routines and an understanding of the value of process. Spending much of his childhood alone, he cultivated the habit of observing small interactions in his surroundings and imagining the worlds beyond them, which later became the foundation of his artistic thinking.

Rather than remaining focused on specific materials or forms, Lee explores the relationships and processes that emerge through the interaction of different materials, paying close attention to the layers of the unseen world revealed through these interactions. He continues to experiment with translating these insights into visual structures. Currently, he is an active resident artist at the Sindang Creative Arcade. His <Log> series was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2025 Cheongju International Craft Competition and has been permanently acquired by the Cheongju Craft Museum.
